INSTRUCTIONS FOR CALIGARI DEMO
There are two ways to run Caligari: The first is simple; insert the Demo
Disk into internal Amiga drive and reboot. After this the program will
start all by itself. Second way to run the program is from the workbench.
This is attractive because if program and data are copied to ramdisk
or hard disk program executes much faster than from floppy disk. To run
the program from ramdisk type the following from CLI (demo disk is
assumed to be in df1:):
COPY DF1:CALDATA RAM: ALL
COPY DF1:CALIG#? RAM:
COPY DF1:NEW#? RAM:
ASSIGN CALDATA: RAM:
(note: you could substitute DF2:, VD0:, VDK:, or your hard disk
partitions as appropriate)
After this close CLi and select program icon from ramdisk. Also on
Amiga 2000 run "Fastmem" to speed up the execution. If you run into
problems doing this give us a call.
Initially the program enters the object design module with navigation menu
active. Try to move cursor to the perspective area. Press left mouse
button and move the mouse while holding the button down. ENCIR moves the
eye around the point the eye looks at. Release the button and select
MOVE from the menu. Now the eye moves linearly in space up and down,
left and right, and in and out (press right button for in-out
movement).
Select PRIM from the bottom menu strip and load one of the primitives
into the work space. Once your object appears on the perspective grid
select TRANS to move the object, ROT to rotate it or SCALE to change
its size. Try also different combination of X, Y, and Z axes (these
gadgets restrict operations to only one or two dimensions at the time).
Load more primitives and use PICK gadget to select among them. Try
RENDER gadget for sloid view (you can get better solid view in scene
module). Use UNDO to correct your errors and ERASE to delete objects
from working space. Try also Orthogonal views for precise positioning
of objects. Orthogonal views work identically to perspective view.
Use LOAD option to load some predesigned objects. Use arrow down from
PICK option to access parts of complex objects (select the arm of
the robot, then select ROT Z to pivot it around robot's shoulder).
This is called HIERARCHICAL access. Selecting ETC will bring up numeric
submenu. Try turn on the GRID from this submenu and notice that
objects now move and rotate in predefined steps.
From TOOLS you can GLUE simple objects together, COPY them and also you
can access EXTRUDER. Try to draw several shapes (make holes in the
if you want) and extrude the shapes using EXTRUDE, SPIN, and CONE options.
Select SCENE for scene module. This will bring up a simple scene.
Render the scene. First tim ethat you select RENDER the program compiles
some data so be patient. AFter that you can change the scene and the
eyepoint and you can get solid view very quickly. You can run the real
time script preview by exiting the program and typing "preview ncga"
from the CLI. Script in Caligari is also fully functional.
(note: I have chosen NOT to include the 250K "ncga" wireframe script
from this upload to save on download time. It's just a wireframe
animation of the word "amiga" and a checkmark moving around).
Many options in Caligari are configurable: you can add or subtract menu
strips (using close icons), change data paths, scenes (from main menu),
set number of segments for extruder operations, number of palette colors,
etc., but this goes beyond the scope of simple instructions. All
operations on this demo are functional however, including lights, colors,
script and rendering functions.
We hope you will enjoy this demo disk and decide to order the full
program which comes with full documentation an duser support from Octree
Software.
